from Dr Carl Gustav Jung:
“I shall not commit the fashionable stupidity of regarding everything I cannot explain as a fraud.”
Almost everyone has a tale or two to tell featuring experiences which cannot be explained within the framework of scientific rationalism – the dominant paradigm of our era. We have much to thank science for: it has led some of the world from the darkness of Mediaeval superstition to the highly developed material comforts of 21st Century living.
But it has thus far failed to explain adequately a range of experiences which people have persisted in having for many millennia: those which fall under the general heading of ‘the paranormal’. The mere uttering of this word has some people foaming at the mouth with rage and denial, others rapt with attention and desperate to hear more.
I am by nature a sceptical person. Whilst respecting the wisdom and perspective others have to offer, I need the testimony of my own direct experience, and am more inclined to disbelieve than to believe. It takes a lot to convince me that there are other levels of reality than the one on which we all live, move and have our being by common consensus.
However, during the Winter/Spring of 2004/5 I had the time to record a range of experiences which had lurked in my memory banks over some thirty years, refusing to be forgotten. At last I was able to make peace with a troubling dimension of my own being.
Welcome to “Wisps from the Dazzling Darkness” – a sceptic’s take on paranormal experience
This is the memoir I wrote from that 2004/5 recording of my own paranormal episodes. They are set in a rational context of introduction, classification, and commentary, concluding with a long reflection on how such experiences might be reconciled with the most recent findings of science: “An open-minded sceptic sums up….”
See the black panel at the top of this page: all chapter headings are in white. Read them in order, or just dip in to what most grabs your interest! And don’t forget to let me know what you think, via email or comments.
I hope that my openness will help others who seem also to be ‘porous’ to intermittent paranormal intrusion, to be more accepting and at peace with what many people’s recorded experiences over many centuries appears to validate: that there are more Realities than one in our small corner of the cosmos….
